Rokude Nashiko (Japanese for ‘reprobate child’, her real name is Megumi Igarashi) didn’t have a clue how her vagina looked, so she made a plaster cast.
She found the result rather boring and thus decided to decorate the plaster model. That idea was the start of her vagina art. She made models, lamps, phone covers, necklaces, a comic book and even a three metres long canoe. Every product is based on the shape of her vagina.
This way she tackles the Japanese taboo on all things ‘pussy’. ‘Because the penis is accepted in Japan. It is seen as the symbol of fertility and is displayed during festivals and even in art. Vaginas however, are thought to be obscene. Girls are raised with the idea that their vagina is abnormal. I want to make the pussy more casual, an object that is open for discussion.’
Mankochan
Mankochan – a cartoon style 3D-print of her vagina she sent to her fans – caused Rokude Nashiko problems, again. She was arrested for obscenity. The charge: sending out obscene 3D-prints and CD-ROMs. If convicted, the penalty could be up to two years in prison and/or a fine of 2.5 million yen (about 13.000 pound). The artist doesn’t consider her vagina ‘obscene’. To be continued…
