It’s always a good idea to carry some tampons, isn’t it? Not only if you’re a woman, but also if you’re a man, at least according to American survival expert Creek Stewart. ‘Are you manly enough to include a tampon or two in your survival kit?’
Creek Stewart is a senior instructor at the Willow Haven Outdoor School for Survival, Preparedness & Bushcraft in Anderson in the American state of Indiana. He’s also the guy to speak to if you ever are lost in the bush with a tampon in your bag. According to Stewart, the device could also be seen as a new survival product: the Tactical Adventure Medical Preparedness Outdoors Necessity (T.A.M.P.O.N.). ‘Are you manly enough to include a tampon or two in your survival kit? Remember, it’s not IF but WHEN.’ Here are 10 tampon survival uses.
Use the sterile cotton wadding as a bandage.
Make a crude water filter out of the cotton wadding and an empty water bottle. This doesn’t help against chemicals, but does filter out sediments and floating particles.
Pull the tampon apart and use the cotton wadding as tinder. The dry cotton fibres will easily catch fire.
Use part of the applicator with a piece of cotton in it as a straw so you can drink out of puddles. Again: this won’t purify your water, but will at least filter out the sediments.
Turn it into a candle. Fill a shell with animal fat (you’ll have to hunt for survival anyway) and use the tampon string as a wick. Not keen on hunting animals? You can also use pine sap as a fuel.
Use the tampon string as cordage. For example when making a trap.
To make a good blow dart, you don’t need feathers. You can also use the cotton of a tampon as blow dart fletching. Use the string of the tampon to keep the cotton into place.
Use the applicator as a blow pipe. Then use this blow pipe to intensify hot coals and burn a cavity in a log. This way you can make a water-tight container.
The packaging of a tampon is waterproof and thus the perfect place to store matches. Use the string to tie it off.
The storage bag of a tampon can be turned into a bobber. Put a bit of cotton in it to make sure it floats.
